The RochesterWorks! Digital Skills program has been in existence for several years now, and has given local youth the chance to work in their potential career fields through intensive and exciting paid internships. From the Democrat and Chronicle, to Highland Hospital, to the Rochester Rhinos, students have had the opportunity to work in career fields that they are most interested in and employers have had the opportunity to see these young people mature, contribute, and shine right in front of their very eyes. All students must complete an extensive online curriculum including Microsoft Office Suite as well as soft skill courses such as “Phone Etiquette” and “Dealing with Difficult People in the Work Place” in order to “earn” their internship.

Ruthie Lora has had an interest in cosmetology/barbering for quite some time. Others in her family are in the business, and she wanted to get a better idea of how people become stylists and eventually open their own businesses. Lora was placed at Sharp Edgez Barber Institute, with owners Ahmon and Tomeika Bryant, where students go to get the education and guidance they need to become a New York State licensed barber. She was able to see what goes into running a business, assisting the staff and students with anything and everything. She became an integral part of the Institute and was a welcome help, especially being able to utilize her computer skills that she learned through the Digital Skills online curriculum, and the personal skills that she had learned through some of the soft skill courses and DSY special events.

Lora has really enjoyed her time working with RochesterWorks! and Sharp Edgez. “DSY is really fun…” said Lora. “I feel like it’s made me more professional, therefore I am better prepared for my next job.”
