Role Description

The Career Service Advisor will work intensively with recipients receiving public assistance who are assigned to the Work Experience Program (WEP) and who are ready to obtain competitive employment.  This is a collaboration between RochesterWorks! and the Department of Human Services.

Major Responsibilities

  • Work intensively with individuals receiving social services.
  • Ability to work closely with entire team.
  • Manage an outcome-based caseload.
  • Quickly developing rapport with customers.
  • Have a rapport with businesses.
  • Discovering and utilizing internal/external motivations in others.
  • Will be responsible for effectively and accurately maintaining a large caseload.
  • Caseload management includes but may not be limited to the following; intake, assessment, creating goals, monitoring progress, making recommendations for additional services.
  • Will be required to keep detailed records of pertinent interactions with customer.
  • Act as a liaison for the customer.
  • Intensively assesses the skills of job seekers and makes recommendations for short-term and long-term goals.
  • Able to take a gentle yet firm approach to dealing with customers.
  • Strong desire to make a difference in the lives of individuals.
  • Performs an initial assessment of new career center customers to determine work readiness including work history, education, skills, job seeking tools (e.g., resume), support system (childcare, transportation, housing), and personal/emotional factors.
  • Stays current regarding occupational, educational, and labor market information in order to assist customers in determining and carrying out vocational and educational objectives.
  • Assists with all areas of development, assessment through job retention.
  • Reviews and assists with resume development as needed.
  • Use the One Stop Operating System (OSOS) to document services provided to job seekers including initial assessment, job search assistance, career advisement, and case management.
  • Record detailed notes in Department of Human Services System (WTWCMS)
  • Other duties and special projects.


  • Bachelor’s degree preferred with one year related experience OR Associate’s degree with two years’ experience in a related or transferrable field.
  • Must have knowledge or strong interest in community services.
  • Must have a desire to see others succeed.
  • Experience in working with diverse populations in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Develop effective working relationships and work well as part of a team to achieve organizational goals.
  • Must be flexible to assist in areas as needed.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to complete paperwork and data maintenance on a timely basis.
  • Must be able to take a creative approach to dealing with and motivating customers.
  • Must always maintain professionalism.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain/sustain a solid relationship with county employees and customers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office and related software.

Individuals may need to sit or stand as needed. This position may require walking primarily on a level surface for periodic periods throughout the day.  Additionally, must be able to walk from the parking area to the Career Center in all weather conditions.  Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required to file documents or store materials throughout the work day. Proper lifting techniques required. This position may include lifting up to 10 pounds for files, computer printouts on occasion.
