Positive Perseverance Pays Off
Joanna Stoica was told in April 2009 that her full-time job was changing to part-time and would eventually be eliminated. She was laid off three months later.
“I went in with the attitude, ‘I know all this. I’ll just see what it’s about.’ And when I got there, it was more like, ‘Oh my gosh, I wish I’d come in more ready to learn.’”

But Joanna's natural optimism, and a Career Navigator program in l
ate September, helped her stay positive during her job search. The program helped her with networking – an activity she needed for personal and professional reasons. “I’m single and live alone, and some days were really hard because there wasn’t any interaction with anyone,” recalls Joanna, who spent more than 200 exhausting hours, averaging 45 hours a week, looking for employment. “So having somewhere to go and people to talk to was really beneficial to me.”
Career Navigator helped focus her search efforts, which included in-person meetings and e-mail contacts. Joanna admits the experience was more valuable than she had expected: “I went in with the attitude, ‘I know all this. I’ll just see what it’s about.’ And when I got there, it was more like, ‘Oh my gosh, I wish I’d come in more ready to learn.’” She got so much out of the five-day program, she continued with the search teams, using them as a resource for staying positive and helping others do the same.
Joanna ended up landing a job she had previously been passed over for at Pictometry, as Technical Project Manager. She began her job in early November.
“It was surreal,” she says. “There was nothing, nothing, nothing, then this happened. You just never know. Everything can change in one day.”
