“My philosophy for job seekers,” Grace said, “is that you should go it for even if you don’t have all the qualifications. Job requirements are often a wish list rather than actual requirements. I told Reba they may be willing to compromise if she presented well. The worst they can do is tell you no!” --Grace Melton, Employment Specialist

'Going for it' Pays off for Reba - Hired for Job Where She Could Help People

by Jim Trowbridge, Facilitator/Employment Specialist

For various reasons, Reba had not worked in almost two years when she came to the RochesterWorks! Resource Room at Monroe County Department of Human Services, looking for assistance.

She had tried searching for a job on her own but wasn’t getting anywhere.  She didn’t have a resume and wasn’t sure of the most effective way to conduct a search. Her financial situation was worsening and public assistance just didn’t seem to be enough.

Employment Specialist, Grace Melton, took an instant liking to Reba.  “She really wanted to work. There was no self-pity or excuses in Reba; she just needed some help figuring out the way to get there.”

Together they worked on job search strategies, and follow-up tactics.  Grace helped her design a strong, flexible resume.

“We were applying to normal jobs, like cashiering and customer service – jobs that might be easier to get.  But pretty soon I discovered Reba really wanted a job where she could help people – she just didn’t mention it because she didn’t think she would qualify for a human services position without experience or a great work record.”

Grace encouraged Reba to apply to Hillside Children’s Center, even though she was missing some of the qualifications that Hillside called for including a driver’s license.  “My philosophy for job seekers,” Grace said, “is that you should go for it even if you don’t have all the qualifications. Job requirements are often a wish list rather than actual requirements. I told Reba they may be willing to compromise if she presented well. The worst they can do is tell you no!”

Reba applied and got an interview.  She told Grace that she thought she did very well but then came the wait.  She waited one week and followed up with a call.  After another week and more follow up calls, there was still no decision.  She continued her job search.

After nearly five weeks Reba came into the Resource Room and saw Grace. “They hired me!” she said.  Hillside hired her as a Sociotherapist.  Reba continues to do well and loves her job. “It was great.  She deserved it all,” said Grace.  “And you know – she’s a big hugger!”
