It Worked for Me!

Life After the Automotive Industry

In 2006 Yoosoon was laid off from her production job at Valeo Electrical Systems. Having been employed at this General Motors supplier since 1989, she lost her job due to foreign competition.

Many displaced auto industry workers find it hard to obtain a comparable job with their current skills. Yoosoon took advantage of retraining and wage support benefits offered through the federal Trade Act.

With assistance from RochesterWorks! staff, she planned to enter a one-year program to become a licensed practical nurse. However, Yoosoon experienced a family emergency. Her husband had been in a serious accident and needed her care. Would she have to put her career goals on hold?

As it turned out, RochesterWorks! staff was able to work with Yoosoon to change her plan of study to a two-year nursing program. With this less demanding schedule she would be able to assist her husband with his recovery while she pursued her career goal.

Yoosoon graduated from her program in 2008 and is now working as a licensed practical nurse, assisting dialysis patients. She says that she is very grateful for this program and for all of the help that RochesterWorks! has given her.

If you have lost your job due to foreign trade, please call RochesterWorks! or come in to one of our locations to find out how you might benefit from the Trade Act program.
