Guest Speaker Series
Overwhelming Demand for Workshop, 50+ Career Search:  Debunking the Myths

Tele-Seminar: Thursday, April 10, 2008 from 1:00 to 2:30 pm
Three part series coming end of April

Is age discrimination real?  Many of the customers at RochesterWorks would answer “yes” to this question.  However, it may not be an issue of how many birthdays celebrated, but of biases or assumptions made of those who are more mature.

Dr. Rita Carey first presented “50+ Career Search:  Debunking the Myths” in November 2007.  Within one week of announcing this topic, the workshop was filled and another had to be scheduled to accommodate more than 70 people wishing to attend.  RochesterWorks! Career Center at Waring Road also offered the workshop in mid December to a packed audience.

Dr. Carey is a professional development coach with 15 years experience in career management.  Rita has worked with clients from government and small companies to Fortune 500 companies.  As the director of RCM Associates, she provides leadership and career coaching and has helped hundreds of individuals match their strengths, skills and abilities to their professional career choices.

In this workshop, participants walk away with an understanding of employer concerns related to hiring more mature workers, including the myths.  Additionally, they learn to become aware of work environments that are more likely to use qualifiers other than age as selection criteria, and reflect upon the beliefs of mature workers that are barriers to gaining employment.  Dr. Carey guides the workshop participants to help them strategize ways to overcome these stereotypes and biases in their networking encounters, resumes and interviews.

Understanding and listening to the needs of job seekers is one reason why customers utilize RochesterWorks!.  There is definitely an audience for this topic, given the large numbers of baby boomers in the Finger Lakes area.

Tele-Seminar: In order to meet this need, Dr. Carey and RochesterWorks are teaming up to offer a tele-seminar in two parts.  This will allow for a much greater audience participation.  The tele-seminar is on Tuesday, April 8 and Thursday, April 10, 2008 from 1:00 to 2:30 pm.  Pre-registration is required.

For more information or to pre-register call 258-3500.
