City of Rochester and RochesterWorks! Collaborate to Create Summer Employment Opportunities for Youth

“Summer employment helps youth maintain and enhance basic educational skills, complete high school and pursue further education, explore careers, see the relationship between what is learned in school and skills required on the job, and contribute to the community in positive ways.” --John Premo

Youth System Manager RochesterWorks!

The City of Rochester and RochesterWorks! have for the second year collaborated to create summer employment opportunities for youth. The types of jobs available will be in recreation centers, local government, community organizations, local colleges and companies.

Funding for the programs is expected to total approximately $1.5 million and will come from the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, the City of Rochester, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and RochesterWorks!

This initiative anticipates reaching 1500 youth that live in Monroe County and are currently enrolled in middle and high school.

Each student who applies to the program is invited to participate in a Job Readiness Training and a mock or pre-screen interview before he or she can be considered for hire. A parent or guardian must also attend an orientation when they receive information on the program and strategies to support the student in employment.

John Premo, Youth System Manager for RochesterWorks! said, “The benefits of summer employment are many, including helping youth maintain and enhance basic educational skills, complete high school and pursue further education, explore the world of work and careers that are in demand, see the relationship between what is learned in school and skills required on the job, and contribute to the community in positive ways.”

If you are an employer and would like to consider hiring a youth or participating as a worksite for a youth this summer please contact Sandra Piccolo, Business Services Representative at (585)241-6046.
