Meet Juan, a hardworking father who sought support from RochesterWorks to transition from the food industry to a more stable, higher-paying career. Working long hours as a line cook without benefits, Juan faced challenges making ends meet while supporting his growing family. Juan dreamed of becoming a Commercial Driver, knowing it could provide better career and income opportunities for him.
RochesterWorks supported Juan with a step-by-step action plan: helping him research Commercial Driver License (CDL-B) training programs, funding his educational testing and licensing fees, and assisting with transportation costs. RochesterWorks also guided him through workshops on resume writing, interview skills, and job retention. When Juan encountered issues with his CDL-B licensing application, his Navigator even accompanied him to the DMV to provide support and ensure he had the correct documentation.
Through our collaborative efforts, Juan completed his CDL-B training and earned additional endorsements to meet employer requirements. Juan now works for the City of Rochester in the Waste Management field, earning a higher wage with improved benefits. His new career has provided financial stability and a better future for his family.
